After starting with a field of 35 competitors, it took over an hour to whittle that number down to one person who is this year’s top speller in Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District). Kimberly Garza, a seventh grader from Mission Jr. High School (pictured left) won this year’s annual district spelling bee. Edgar Garza, a seventh grader from K. White Jr. High School (pictured center) came in second place. Both of these students are now advancing to the 24th Annual Rio Grande Valley Regional Spelling Bee to be held on March 3, at Texas State Technical College in Harlingen, TX.
The third place finisher in this year’s spelling bee was Isaias Barroso, a fifth grade student from Alton Elementary School (pictured right). Students in grades 3-8 can participate.
