The Veterans Memorial High School (VMHS) choir not only had the most students ever, participate in the District Solo and Ensemble contest; but they also had the most ever qualify for state competition. The VMHS choir program had 30 students compete at the district level. All 30 students earned a Division 1 (superior) or a Division 2 (excellent) rating for their performances. Of those 30 students, 13 qualified for state.
The VMHS choir students who qualified for state solo and Ensemble competition are: Jennifer Corona, Demetrius Davis, Marco De Anda, Stephanie De La Garza, Valerie Escamilla, Gabriela Lopez, Natasha Maldonado, Esequiel Mirelez, Patricia Ortiz, Raul Rivera, Kivani Sanchez, Cherish Varlack, Tess Varlack.
Other students who earned a Division 1 rating, but did not qualify for state are: Alexander Reyes, Alexis Barrientes, Kelly Gutierrez, Matthew Pena, Angie Roura, Christopher Vargas, Jessica Villarreal, Myrna Villarreal.
Students earning a Division 2 rating are: Noel Cortez, Jessica Davidson, Sara-Maria Olivarez, Stephanie Vargas, Myhra Zarrate, Pearl Jazmine Ruiz, Alyssa Gonzales, Alejandra Tamez.
Students compete with classifications/grade levels of songs ranging from 3 (moderate) to 1 (extremely difficult). In order to qualify for state competition, students must receive a Division 1 rating on class 1 song. The state finals will be held at The University of Texas at Austin on May 26.
