Mission CISD DECA students look to take majority control of state offices

When the DECA student organization holds it state leadership conference later this spring, three Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) students hope to take control of the majority of state officer positions. However, it is not as sinister as it sounds. Two students from Veterans Memorial High School (VMHS) and one from Mission High School (MHS) are running for separate state offices. If each succeeds in their campaigns, a Mission CISD student would hold three of the five state officer positions in the Texas DECA organization.

Gonzalo Arevalo from VMHS is running for vice president. His schoolmate, Galilea Zorola is running for reporter. John Diaz from MHS is campaigning for sergeant at arms.

While it is not unusual for Mission CISD students to run for state office positions in their student organizations; it is the first time so many from one organization are running in the same year.

Diaz (pictured front), said he likes being a part of something bigger than him and the responsibilities that come with being a part of that.

Zorola (pictured center), said she thinks the biggest challenge in running for state office will be trying to stand out in the competition with a good speech and campaign.

Facing all the competition at the state level, is what Arevalo (pictured back) felt would be the toughest part as he runs for vice president at the state level.
