A group of 28 students at Veterans Memorial High School (VMHS) have become charter members of the first Math honor society in the district. They were officially inducted into the Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society during a special ceremony this week. This is a national high school and two-year college Mathematics honor society.
The inductees all met requirements for membership, which includes completion of four semesters of college preparatory Math and are enrolled in still more advanced courses. The course work must also be done with distinction. For Mu Alpha Theta, distinction is defined as having at least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4-point scale for the Math work.
Inductees from the VMHS Class of 2012 are: Daniel Alejos, Kimberly Arrambide, Louis T. Brown, Jessica Buentello, Bernadette Escobedo, Orlando Farias Jr., Paola Gonzalez, Eduardo Garcia, Daniel Leal, Michael Longoria, Tevin Luna, Julio Mendez, Issac Otero, Cesar Rios.
Inductees from the Class of 2013 are: Veronica Almendarez, Victor G. De Leon, Michelle Guajardo, Lisa Ann Lozano, Fernando Martinez, Juan Carlos Moreno, Adrian Perez, Daniel Rojas, Kivani Sanchez, Gabriel Siegel, Aaron Tijerina.
Three students from the Class of 2014 were also inducted. They are: Giselle Castillo, Matthew Sparks, Vanessa Osorio.
The purpose of Mu Alpha Theta is to inspire keen interest in Mathematics, develop strong scholarship in the subject, and promote the enjoyment of Mathematics in high school and two-year college students. Mu Alpha Theta has over 88,000 student members in more than 1,800 schools.
