Mission CISD teacher selected as Regional Secondary Teacher of the Year

A Mission CISD teacher has been selected as a Regional Teacher of the Year. Rosbel Pena was officially named as this year’s Region One Secondary Teacher of the Year. The announcement was made during a special banquet that also honored all the District Teachers of the Year from throughout Region One.

Pena was selected as the Mission CISD Secondary Teacher of the Year in May 2013. His application was then automatically sent in for the Region One contest. Pena will now be entered into the State Teacher of the Year contest, where he will represent the region and Mission CISD.

Pena is currently serving Mission CISD students as a sixth grade math teacher at Alton Memorial Junior High School. He has been with Mission CISD for 20 years.

This is the second year in a row that the Region One Secondary Teacher of the Year has come from Mission CISD and the second year in a row that the region will be represented by a teacher from Alton Memorial Jr. High School.  Yvette Nevarez, who also teaches at Alton Memorial Jr. High School, was selected as the Region One Secondary Teacher of the year, last year. This will be the third time in the last four years that a Region One Teacher of the Year has come from Mission CISD.

A total of 46 teachers were entered by 26 school districts in this year’s contest and were honored during the Region One event. Victor Alonzo, Mission CISD Elementary Teacher of the Year, was among those recognized for his selection as a District Teacher of the Year. He serves Mission CISD students at Marcell Elementary School.
