Mission, Texas- Mission High School (MHS) Agricultural Mechanics students recently competed in the Tulsa Torch Cutting Contest held at the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Showgrounds. The MHS students included the Agriculture Mechanics, Early College Welding, and South Texas College School to Career Academy and Dual Enrollment (SCADE) programs. Each participating student received a $250 scholarship from the Tulsa Welding School in Houston, Texas. A total of 27 MHS students competed against 478 others from around the region.
Sophomore, Artemio Balderas from the Early College Welding program at MHS placed second, overall. He received several prizes that included: an automatic welding helmet, Tulsa Welding School cap, and a scholarship paying half of the enrollment at Tulsa Welding School in Houston.
The welding contest gave the students the opportunity to showcase their torch cutting skills along with performing safety procedures and techniques they are learning in class. The contest consisted of five rounds. Each round focused on a different skill challenge.
A total of $6,750 in scholarship money was earned by the 27 MHS students who competed.
