MHS FBLA member places sixth at national competition

Mission High School (MHS) graduate Andy Garcia becomes only the second MHS Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter member to be recognized at the national level by placing sixth in Accounting II at the FBLA National Leadership Conference. Garcia qualified to compete at nationals by placing first at the Texas FBLA Leadership Conference and at the FBLA Area competition.

This is not Garcia’s first trip to a national competition for this past school year. This past spring, Garcia placed first in Fundamental Accounting at the national Business Professionals of America (BPA) competitions and also traveled to the DECA national leadership event to compete in Accounting.

The FBLA Accounting II competition consists of two parts: an objective test and a production test. A one-hour objective test is administered based on accounting competencies. One hour was also given for the school site production test held at MHS. The production test includes, but is not limited to: a personal journal, payroll, bank reconciliation, financial statements, inventory, depreciation, and a worksheet.

A total of two MHS FBLA chapter members qualified for nationals. Diana del Moral competed in Accounting I, but did not place in the top ten.

FBLA is a national organization for high school students preparing for careers in business occupations.
