Mission CISD to hold a fun book battle to encourage reading

Mission, Texas- For several years, Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) librarians have used the Texas Library Association’s Bluebonnet Book Awards program to help encourage elementary and junior high school students to read a wide variety of books. The Bluebonnet books consist of 20 different books, selected by a committee of librarians from the Texas Library Association.

Mission CISD librarians have upped the ante by creating the Annual Battle of the Bluebonnet Books contest. A team of five students is selected from each elementary school and junior high school, grades 3-6, to compete in the quiz-show style contest. The teams are challenged with answering several questions about each of the 20 books on the Bluebonnet list.

This year’s Battle of the Bluebonnet Books will be held at the Alton Memorial Jr. High School Gymnasium on Tuesday, February 24, from 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m.

This year’s event will also feature local poet/author, Frank Brewster and his daughter/author who is also a district junior high school student. Abigail Brewster is currently an 8th grader at K. White Jr. High School. She penned a children’s book titled, Muddy Paws.
