When the Austen in Austin book event is held Saturday, May 19, a Mission High School librarian will be leading the panel discussion. Margie Longoria said she was asked to moderate the panel discussion when she attended a book signing in Houston, TX over spring break that featured the authors that will be involved in the Austin event.  Longoria has previously met one of the authors about a year ago at a book festival and had kept in touch.

This weekend’s event is called Austen in Austin and brings together three authors for the panel discussion that have been inspired by author Jane Austen.

Longoria said she leads several book clubs, including one that is solely Jane Austen, her favorite author. She said she also belongs to the Jane Austen Society of North America and finds herself traveling in her spare time to attend various events.

Over the next several days, parents of students in Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) should receive an envelope from their child’s school with registration materials for the 2012-2013 school year.   Instead of parents being presented with a bunch of blank forms to contend with at registrations in the fall, Mission CISD schools will be sending parents a registration packet now that contains forms that have been pre-populated with the most recent information the district has on record. Officials ask that parents take the time to review the forms, make any corrections needed and then have the forms returned to their child’s school before the end of this school year.

“We are trying to simplify the entire registration process for parents,” said Jorge Cavazos, administrator for the information systems department. “We have been working on trying to consolidate the required paperwork for parents as much as possible.                 The focus of Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) on preparing students for college, careers and life takes on many forms. One is through Career and Technical Education tracks with partner South Texas College (STC). This past weekend, 48 Mission CISD seniors were eligible to participate in STC graduation ceremonies after earning certificates that not only bring them closer to a college degree, but also may help them in being more workforce-ready when they graduate from Mission High School (MHS) or Veterans Memorial High School (VMHS) in early June.

“Over the last two years, these students have been taking dual enrollment coursework that has earned most of them a year’s worth of college credit,” explained Sergio Pena, director for career technical education at Mission CISD.  “These students can now pursue an Associate Degree at STC and finish in one year, instead of two. In some cases, their certificate level training will also allow them to step into the...
