AMJH holding a special marathon

Mission, Texas- Alton Memorial Jr. High School (AMJH) is in the middle of a marathon of sorts. The campus’ Second Annual Reading Marathon is in full swing. AMJH students, staff, and community leaders are participating in a week-long event that has a reader continuously reading during school hours this week (7:55 a.m.-4:00 p.m.).

A total of 90 readers are participating in the event that has become quite popular. The list of community readers includes TV personalities, area law enforcement officials, paramedics, nurses, and principals from elementary schools that feed students to AMJH. Each reader gets to plop down in a comfy easy chair with a foot stool, milk and cookies, and 25 minutes to read with no one to bother them. The reading station is set up in the main campus concourse, just outside the library.

Students who signed up for the marathon get excused from an elective class for 25 minutes to read the book of their choice during their time in the marathon. Teachers and staff members use some of their conference period time for the opportunity to participate.
