VMHS mariachi group advances to state competition

 

            Mission, Texas- The Veterans Memorial High School (VMHS) Mariachi Toros de Plata has learned that the group has qualified for the state Texas Association of Mariachi Educators (TAME) competition to be held in early February in San Antonio, Texas.       

The VMHS mariachi group entered the competition by submitting live recordings of three songs. The performances were judged on: technical abilities, vocal abilities, and overall quality of performance. Unlike the preliminary competition, the state contest will consist of live performances in front of the judges.

            The members of the Mariachi Toros de Plata are (back row, left to right): Adam Barrera, Alexis Gonzalez, Horacio Salinas, Phillip Cantu, Gerardo Gonzalez, Jose Salinas, Edgardo Perez, Patricia Valle Roman, Valeria Munoz, Victoria Cantu. On the front row are: Elizabeth Garcia, Samantha Perez (Mission Collegiate High School), Leslie Hernandez (MCHS), Joshua Troy Alcaraz, Aylin Salinas, Aurora De La Rosa, Ayla Gonzalez, Ashley Gonzalez (MCHS), Isabel Vazquez, Lorenah Vasquez. Last year was the first time the VMHS mariachi group qualified for the TAME state competition. They placed ninth among 6A schools.
