Students Board the Bus to Learn Safety and Emergency Procedures

Mission, Texas, October 27, 2017- Mission CISD transportation department has been busy the last few weeks providing students throughout the district a presentation on bus safety and emergency procedures. A team of bus drivers conduct the presentations annually and today they were at Mims Elementary.

“Similar trainings used to be required by the state,” explained Carlos Lerma, director for transportation. “While that requirement ended a few years ago, we felt it was important enough to continue with it.”

This training continues to be in the forefront for the district along with the transportation department in order to provide the students with these procedures for when they travel on a bus for an extra-curricular activity, a field trip, or to get to and from school. Providing students this information will better prepare them for any type of emergency.

Lerma said that by giving the trainings to the students, they hope the information becomes second nature to them and limits any panic, should there be an actual emergency while they are on the school bus.

The presentation consists of several topics such as; bus safety rules, how to use all emergency exits and doors, what to do in case the driver becomes incapacitated, how to operate the emergency brake, how to use the radio to call for help, how to use the fire extinguisher and first aid kit. The transportation department is confident the presentations provide students with the information needed for a variety of different situations or emergencies.
