Mission CISD to host Fifth Annual Back to School Bash

Mission, Texas- Still need to take care of a few back to school errands like immunizations, registration, sports physicals, or haircuts? Mission Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) has scheduled a special event for Thursday, August 2 to help Mission CISD families deal with some of the last minute items. The Fifth Annual Mission CISD Back to School Bash will be held at the Veterans Memorial High School Gym from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

In addition to the many services that will be available that evening, many students will also be able to get a free backpack with school supplies, thanks to the generous support of local businesses and community organizations. The backpacks will only be given to registered Mission CISD students on a first come, first served basis while supplies last.

“Last year, over 2,300 backpacks were given out during the event,” said Craig Verley, director of public relations and marketing. “Due to the generosity of our communities and local businesses, it looks like we will be able to provide even more backpacks with supplies this year. What makes this event so special is the direct involvement by the cities of Mission, Alton, and Palmhurst in providing for our students.”

In addition to the backpacks with school supplies, other services that will be offered during the Back to School Bash include:

  • Free vision screenings (Mission Lions Club)
  • Free student haircuts (provided by Mission CISD cosmetology students)
  • Late online registration
  • General school information for each Mission CISD campus
  • Immunizations ($5 per vaccine for students, Hidalgo County Department of Health and Human Services)
  • Sport Physicals ($20, Ashley Pediatric Mobile Clinic beginning at 3:00 p.m.)
  • High school fine arts student performances
  • Information from our community and corporate sponsors

For those who are planning to take advantage of the physicals, officials with Ashley Pediatrics say the first page of the physical form must be filled out and signed by parents before the physical will be conducted. This page includes questions about the student’s medical history. The form can be downloaded from the district website, www.mcisd.net. Then navigate to About Us, Departments, Athletics. From the Athletics Department page, the link to the physicals form will be on the right hand side of the page. Physicals will be available beginning at 3:00 p.m.

For students who have a condition that may interfere with medical clearance, parents should bring a clearance letter from a cardiologist or specialist involved with the student’s medical history. Also, if a student wears eye glasses to read, they should bring their eyeglasses with them for the physicals. If a student does not pass the vision screening portion of the physical, a student will not clear their sports physical through Ashley Pediatrics.

Mission CISD officials thank the growing list of Back to School Bash sponsors. Gold level sponsors are: Education Foundation of Mission CISD, Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce, Greater Alton Chamber of Commerce, City of Palmhurst, City of Mission.
