VMHS GEAR UP students branch out into community service project

The GEAR UP program at Veterans Memorial High School (VMHS) is actually part of a federal partnership grant, working with the Region One Education Service Center.  Among the main objectives is to increase the number of targeted students who enter and succeed in post-secondary environments.

The VMHS GEAR UP Patriots Club is going beyond finishing high school and being as prepared as possible for college. They have branched out into more leadership pursuits that include some community service work.

An example of that has come in the form of a special video project that addresses many of the issues they seen teens facing, and how they can work to overcome those obstacles. Some of the topics touched upon include: bullying, depression, self-esteem, and bulimia. The video ends with how parents, teachers, friends, etc. students can seek help and overcome the issues.

The students who participated in the production of the video are: Yaritza Villarreal, Celia Cavazos, Mirna Rodriguez, Jaqueline Gonzalez, Albert Silguero, Dania Rodriguez, Marco Diaz, Sandra Vega, Kerena Lopez, Angel Paniagua, Justin Sanchez, Rosario Garza, Jacqueline Lopez, Olivia Soto, Paola Ortega, Leylany Castillo, Bianca Medina, Yulissa Garcia, Yuzmine Villarreal, Analisa Pena, Samuel Salinas.

The video has been shared during school events and announcements and is available for others to share.
