MHS academic UIL team earns 30-6A District title

                Mission, Texas- The Mission High School (MHS) academic UIL team brought home some nice hardware from the 30-6A District meet held recently. While students earned many medals, the largest item was the district championship trophy.

                The computer applications team took first place, sweeping the competition. Individual results: Iliana Pimental, first place; Sarah Lopez, second place; Jasmin Vega, third place.

                The calculator applications team also swept their competition, earning first place as a team. Individual results: Luis Gonzalez, first place; Edgar Garza, second place; Ricardo Yruegas, third place. Others who contributed to the overall team score were: Samantha Alaniz, Kimberly Ramon.

                The current events team came home with first place honors. Individual results: Violeta Rivera, first place; Eri Longoria, second place. Other team members contributing to the win included Naelly Lopez and Priscilla Perez.

                Second place was earned by the accounting team. Javier Nevarez earned second place. Angel Gomez received fifth place. Others contributing to the second place team were Marco Silva and Dan Huang.

                The number sense team placed second, with Luis Gonzalez earning fourth place and Edgar Garza earning sixth place. Strong performances by Andy Escobedo and Dan Huang contributed to the second place team finish.

                The mathematics team finished in second place. Individually, Luis Gonzalez took fifth place, Edgar Garza took sixth place, and Jin Gao finished in seventh place.

                The literary criticism team came in second place at the district meet. Tiana Rivas earned sixth place. Ashley Bennett took eighth place. Other team members contributing to the second place finish were Nara Morales and Mary Fernandez.

                These seven teams will be advancing to the regional tournament to be held April 24 and 25.

                Several students will also be advancing to the regional tournament as individual competitors. They are: Alexia Puente, headline writing, second place; Jasmin Vega, feature writing, third place; Adriana Navaro, Lincoln Douglas debate, third place; Violeta Rivera, Lincoln Douglas debate, fourth place; Violeta Rivera, persuasive speaking, first place; Eri Longoria, spelling and vocabulary, sixth place.

                Other team members who contributed greatly to the overall sweepstakes total points include: Jasmin Vega, fifth place, ready writing; Samantha Banda, fifth place, prose; Tony Villanueva, sixth place, poetry; Samantha Gonzalez, fifth place, informative speaking. Also, Juan Reyna, Ashley Bennett,  Karen Blanco, Janeth Gonzalez, Jin Gao, Eric De Leon, Omar Madrigal, Stephanie Flores, Kaylyn Delafuente, Jose Gaitan, Gabriela Yanez, Jeremiah Gutierrez, Giselle Ponce, Diego Salinas.

                The One Act Play team, performance also contributed to the district championship. The cast and crew consists of: Christopher Barboza, Fernando Cruz, Joseph Rodriguez, Julian Diaz, Anthonie Raymundo, Adrian Silva, Fernanda Hernandez, Gloria Trevino, Cecilia Gonzalez, Enrique Cantu, Mark Ramos, Hanna Castro, Matthew Castillo, Itzel Flores, Sophia Gonzalez. They are directed by Adrian Guerrero, Silvia Serrano, Joe Hernandez.
