In this Corner Conversation, we get an overview of the different Early College High School options that are available to students in the district. Different Early College High School choices are available at each of our three high school campuses.

Hi everyone welcome to another Corner conversation. I'm Craig Verley director of public relations for Mission CISD. Joining us in the corner today conversation is Mister John Hill from our Gifted and Talented, or advanced academic services department and he is here to talk to us a little bit about our various options that we have for Early College High School programs because we do have a lot to offer there and it can be a little confusing sometimes and we want to try and see what we can do to clear of that just a little bit right now. I'm happy to do it very good I guess for starters we can just kind of work our way around the district almost and kind of touch base on what each of our Early College High School options are that the students have all right let me go in start with our most mature Early College High School and that's a mission Collegiate High School it's a standalone Early College High School at about 500 students and its focus is on really providing a lot of support and producing students that can get their associates degree in interdisciplinary studies because they're the most mature they've been around for it since 2012-2013 it's a situation where when you go there you know there are systems in place really really make sure you maximize your dual credit options but also you provide that really small College atmosphere that campus also has something new and on the way that I'll talk to you in just a little bit about with you that was kind of exciting and we will get to that I don't know if somebody is interested in going to say Mission Collegiate High School in particular there is an application process involved in that yes because it's an early college model we can take between 100 and 130 students depending on the and they will have to apply it's a it's what's called a performance blind we basically look at our students and see what best fits into that particular College atmosphere but we don't take into account things like grades as a matter of fact like all Early College High School's we like to target the actress students and really provide students who wouldn't normally be going to college that opportunity to really accelerate their college going to experience the early college high school programs whether at Mission Collegiate High School or one of the others it's not necessarily for the top tier kids necessarily not necessarily but you know as well as we take the top tier and those at risk and I think that's what makes the learning experience specials because you get students together a kind of a Melting Pot of students of educational experiences and they grow from one another very good now will move to our next School...Mission High School they have some Early College option I say up 2 early college options Mission high school has the mission T-Stem program is very similar to the Early College High School except they focus on the engineering pathway and they also have a medical science pathway contained also they are also the first school started with Algebra 1 block this year for our students so our students who entered the T STEM Academy took an entire year of algebra in the first semester by blocking her spending twice the amount of time a regular student would they had great set the first time they attempted this the only thing that that particular Early College High School option at T-Stem offers is they offer the AVID program and an AVID program is their way of supporting students who maybe you aren't sure if they want to college or they're scared to college the AVID program teachers use those study success successful skills in studying and really preparing for college that particular associate degree as well that they offer has more than 60 hours it's a very rigorous program and very very successful program the other option we have at Mission High School is the CTE Early College High School it's for the students who might want to do something more Hands-On welding for example a good one but just because you're in welding doesn't mean you don't get an associate degree or don't get the Early College coursework so what it does is students are going to get the more vocational route get their dual-credit coursework and walk out with an associate degree and certification and the the Career Tech Early College High School program Mission High as one of those that actually when we started it a few years ago we were one actually a just a handful in the entire state that were offering such a program which I'm kind of proud of from where we sit now we're going to jump over to the east side of of the district to a Veterans Memorial High School they also have early college options yes as a matter fact they're in their first year so Early College Academy the Patriot Early College (PECA) Academy its freshmen right now and next year of course will be freshman and sophomore their focus primarily is along engineering but they're also focusing on architecture and because it's still growing it it's one of those situations where if you go there you get to be amongst the trailblazers because as much as we planned for early colleges it's our student experience is it really I think craft what our early colleges really end being because are we provide very individualized services for these students so we get a group together they have especially at the Patriot Early College Academy they have the ability to basically say this is what early college is going to be at Veterans Memorial High School that's an exciting time what happens if I'm a student or I'm a parent of a student who say lives on the Veterans Memorial High School side of the feeder pattern here in the district but I'm interested in going to Mission High School T STEM Academy or their Career Tech Academy what do I do ok here's what's going to happen all of our early college high schools and T-STEMs are currently visiting the middle school campus has a junior high's rather and what we're doing is explaining what we are you would fill out the application for any of these because just because you're on one side of the feeder pattern doesn't mean you can't go to the other because each of them offer very unique experience we want our students to be able to choose which experience fit send them that's very important to remember that just because you live in one particular area when it comes to our Early College Programs doesn't mean you have to attend the early college program that's in that traditional feeder pattern that's correct very good so far Early College High School programs right now we have at Veterans Memorial High School the Patriot Early College Academy at Mission high school Mission the CTE Early College High School and the T STEM Academy then we have the traditional Mission Collegiate High School which is what we started with when we entered the Early College High School program game of things but beginning this fall we're going to add something to Mission Collegiate yes we're very excited we are going to add a Medical Academy is part of Collegiate and what really makes this one different is we're going to focus on the LVN program and some of these programs that are high rigger but really really powerful program utilizing and leveraging Collegiate's ability to really produce really great students who have gone to do great things take that learning environment and really provide that level of support for these LVN programs these medical programs that are rigorous but collegiate's and very small nature allows us to make sure our students will experience that level of success very good. So parents of 8th graders right now need to be trying to make sure they attend those sessions when they're offered at the junior high schools to get a little more information on the Early College programs offer any of them just in case and if for some reason you need more information probably the best bet is to go to their counselor there at the junior high speak with a campus counselor at the junior high and of course you can always call me here at central office I'll be glad to talk about it okay and your number is what my number and my extension is 5506 that would be 323-5506 if you want to talk to Mr. Hill a little bit more about our Early College High School offering here at Mission CISD. that's it for this Corner Conversation Mr. Hill, thank you for joining us thank you and will see you in the next conversation
