The flu season is far from over. In this Corner Conversation, we discuss the various steps we can take to help keep our families healthy.

hi everyone and welcome to another Corner conversation I'm Craig Burley director of public relations for Mission CISD and joining us in the corner today we have Mr Eddie olivarez who heads up our a Delco County Health and Human Services departments and we're here talk a little bit about the flu in case you're not already sick of hearing about the flu or sick from the flu you're going to get a little bit more of it today because it is that important to what's been going on it's been in the new it's the flu season started off early it started off nasty and we're still in the middle of it correct correct our flu season in other parts of the country flu actually sweeter probably around October or November 4th that's really it really starts in December going into March and the peak of ours flu season is in March and February so by the middle of February so we see them most cases that's when we also the most hospitalizations due to flu what are the things that we can look at is that the flu can be prevented with something very simple I vaccine an inexpensive vaccine of a lot of people don't understand that in United States 25 to 30,000 people a year die from influenza or influence of related illnesses along with another medical complication me young children and the elderly we do see some cases where you might get a healthy young or person involved with me young children and Young Elementary School age and of course geriatric age thank you brother with a vaccine and that is is simplest and best preventative measure that a person can take correct sure and it's required every year because Mother Nature has changed your lie in it so it's important to get the most current version very good and of course one of the wives tales about their own that I know I hear all the time when I talk about the flu shots is they're afraid that they'll actually get sick because of the shot so it's an urban myth okay the current vaccination we use it is a null a virus or it's a virus is dead and the way it's used it gets to help develop antibodies in your system things in your immune system to be able to combat the flu now it's important understand the flu shot takes 10 days for it to be active in your body so it's not right away you take a flu shot and then you're protected immediately now and then the other thing it's effective for about eighty-five to ninety percent of the time so you still may get the flu but you will not get a full scale that you would get without the vaccine if we don't get it is if you have a nice weekend so realistically though based upon how things work with our normal flu season and again we're in an abnormal one it's not too late to get the flu shot great time to get flu shot September October but is never too late in fact we give flu shots all the way into May so it is never too late to get a flu shot it one of these for us here they were very unique urine Texas is the regular season of Blues called H3 and too well there's another flu call H1 N1 about 7/8 years ago here in the valley we had a really bad outbreak Rachel in 1 in what age was in what is very prevalent in Latin America and here along the border each one and one is a very high possibility and we actually have people who been hospitalized recently but our car flu vaccination protect you from H1 N1 so it's very important than you get your flu vaccine because the flu vaccine can actually protect you up from four different types of blue oh so it's been ported to get it now outside of getting the flu vaccine you need to do other things sure to help keep the chances of you coming down with the flu down what other steps can we do the most simple steps wash your hands with soap and water cover your mouth when you cough and sneeze make sure that you can go to blow your nose and have a tissue or hanky and dispose of it properly and then wash your hands with soap and water again very important also consider disinfecting some areas like especially with little children you get that first grader that kindergartener know they think that's everything so it gets a little Clorox wipes where they play in I touch a lot because that virus could stick around for a few hours afterwards and then the most important thing is go to your doctor go to the doctor if you don't feel well go to the doctor and then follow the doctor's instructions does it use is going to require some type of bed rest or some type of isolation from the rest of the group you don't want to be involved because I'll with your family members co-workers or students because you can be infectious while you're having your fever is when you're the most infectious and it transmitted by droplet so when you cough sneeze or recovering your head and you could touch somebody that virus trust respect drop is what's important that you follow through on those and we do stress me out at attendance is important was in the schools but if you're truly sick and especially if you're running a fever should stay home until their fever free for at least 24 hours without the use medications so if they're on Tylenol or something like that they need to be fever free without that Tylenol for 24 hours before they come back to school a lot of people will take antibiotics with the flu or self medicate they will go to Mexico and buy medication and it seems like that the flu is a virus so there is no antibiotic and I'll take care of it so what happens a lot of times when you are self-medicating without a doctor's can turn without a doctors consult you may actually be causing more harm because then you're making your child and your family over drug resistant to that any biotic that later in life that resist as we actually be very dangerous to be would need to have access to that everybody for their bodies building immunity to it so do not give any biotics unless they're prescribed by a doctor and if they are prescribed by doctor can you take a complete the entire tree regiment very true and work in the situation where we truly do need everyone's help and being flew Fighters throughout the flu season actually throughout the year but especially this time of year to especially important so the flu shot is the best thing to do we have number of flu shot clinics in the district with the county and we will be continuing to schedule some more so be on the lookout for those announcements through your campus and also through our district social media because we want everyone to be as protected as possible so that you stay as
