In this video, you are introduced to comprehension strategies using music lyrics to teach poetry.

welcome to this poetry comprehension through music poetry can be a difficult genre to teach because it doesn't necessarily follow a particular rule under structure or grammar and on occasion even spelling in essence this is what how to teach her students there is a purpose to what we see on paper teaching about poetry we must introduce or review poetic elements these have probably already been introduced in is great but nevertheless it is always important to go over them with students to ensure proper understanding first and foremost I like creating this poetic element graphic organizer this is something that I would put in my students interactive reading Journal something that we create together teacher explains as it is being introduced and then students are able to add it onto there Journal so that it is always at Arm's Reach whenever they do have a question or need clarification of a particular poetic element within this particular a graphic organizer we can also add exam that actually represent lines rhyme meter stanzas etcetera this particular graphic organizer only contains four of the vast amount of poetic elements additionally in order to ensure student understanding of the quote on quote read between the lines proper understanding of figurative language should be in effect Pikachu which plays a huge role in poetry and music for students to really understand it it must be taught here you have another example of a graphic organizer that could be easily created in your classrooms as you introducing metaphors similes onomatopoeia and personification just to name a few you are also providing examples to your students answering questions clarifying any misconceptions misconceptions Wednesday possibly have the genre of music that I find easier to do this activity with is with country music and this case we have here a song titled wait for you by Joe Nichols now if you want to note that ncisd does not own the rights to this song now as I may continue as a teacher you would give your students the lyrics to the song identifying the poetic elements in this particular poem so the first thing we're going to do is we're going to begin identifying the number of lines in the particular now you can do it any which way you want in this case we're going to color code each of the different poetic elements so the lines will be dark green we think can you tell identifier by the number of stanzas in the poem and all I did was I grouped together the lines and then just put the number of stanza in there if you have a different way of doing it that is perfectly fine I'm in in our case for using orange for Santa's we didn't move on to identify Rhyme now the way I do this is simply I have the students underline they need a words that actually do and then I have them draw little arrow to the word that rhymes now send like to identify it with a a BB Etc this just work easier in my classroom so that they're actually able to make that can chewing with The Rime of course why you're doing this you're having these discussions with the student asking them to tell you which of the words rhyme why do they rhyme you know do they do they have a long vowel sound why is it that we're going to Paris or pair up these words together the last poetic Elementary identify is repetition and as you can see I identified with an R R1 R2 and R3 because those particular Praises were repeated you know three separate times throughout the course of the song now is the class being Guided by the teacher of course we would begin really analyzing this particular poem so if I'm reading the first stanza snow in Montana was three feet high the lady at the counter said there ain't no flights this would be a perfect stopping point you know where you can ask the students you know boys and girls why were there no flights going out you know oh well you know there was a no storm you know those would be some of the answers that you would be getting from the students and I know you would ask them but no where does it say that there was a snowstorm but you know now looking at the suit and you know they would be answering things like yes but you know Street there's a 3ft high worth of snow and now you're getting them to really read between the lines for getting them to understand they're already making inferences and this process would go through over and over Janet and each of these stanzas my now students know how to identify the different poetic elements in a particular poem they know that there's different types of poems but how do we get them to actually see forever as adults it's so easy to say you know imagery are the images the author the poet wants you to seeing your mind now here comes the best part after having reviewed and introduced analyze this particular poem we would show them the music video and now students are able to actually make that connection oh okay so this particular person you know she's sick and I can see it now or no I can see the snow storm I know what they're talking about when they say Coupe DeVille they can actually relate that in and actually know that it's a car that sort of thing that is what music videos or that actually hung music videos would help us in this particular activity lastly I did create a cootie catcher I used a piece of posterboard actually to make it nice and big I mixed in a couple of poetic elements some figurative language I even Incorporated the different types of poems and this you can just spiral and it could be a review activity with your students it's something you know maybe you can use just scaffold there there with that thank you very much
