MCISD Holds First History Fair

December 19, 2016– Mission CISD hosted its first district-wide History Fair Saturday, Dec. 16, at the Mission Historical Museum. Students were invited to create original research projects about history to help them develop critical thinking skills and an appreciation for the effect of past events in their lives today. Students from all campuses in 1st-11th grades participated.

“This was made possible by awesome teachers inspiring students to “Take a Stand in History,” and conduct in-depth studies of world events,” said Dr. Sharon Roberts, Director for Advanced Academic Services/UIL/College Readiness. The goal of the fair is to help students “realiz[e] the impact history had in creating and sustaining belief systems and culture that continue to influence the world today,” she added.

All students presenting received a medal; 450 medals were awarded. Holding the fair at the museum enabled the district to partner to bring history alive. Among the presentations, was the Mims Wax Museum, and the Cavazos Elementary School Rosa Parks arrest reenactment. Students in 6th-12th grade can advance their projects in competition through the National History Day organization.
