Workshop Title: Parent Edition- Dyslexia: What is it and how can I help? -Dr. Cheryl Chase

Description:
This presentation will be presented as a hybrid. Dyslexia is a language-based learning disorder which manifests primarily as difficulty with reading, however problems may also be seen in spelling, writing, and pronouncing words properly. Researchers report that as many as 15% - 20% of the population as a whole have some symptoms of dyslexia, and are likely to struggle with many aspects of academic functioning. This program will define the term “dyslexia” using clear, easy-to-understand terms, and offer “red flags” of the condition to watch for in your students. It will also draw the distinction between dyslexia and other learning disorders, and illustrate the connection between dyslexia and dysgraphia. Empirically-based treatments, instructional strategies, and tried and true accommodations will be shared. The primary source of information for this talk is The Dyslexia Handbook, updated in 2018, published by the Texas Education Agency.
