Workshop Title: Parent Edition-Dysgraphia: What is it and how can I help?

Description:
This session is being presented by Dr. Cheryl Chase. Dysgraphia is a language-based learning disorder, but it impacts primarily writing and written expression. It can manifest as sloppy handwriting, difficulties with spelling, and struggles to put thoughts down on paper. Although less research has been done on this group, studies generally show that between 5% and 20% of elementary-school-aged children contended with a writing disorder. This program will define the term “dysgraphia” using clear, easy-to-understand terms, and offer “red flags” of the condition to watch for in your students. It will also draw the distinction between dysgraphia and other learning disorders, and illustrate the connection between dysgraphia and dyslexia. Empirically-based treatments, instructional strategies, and tried and true accommodations will be shared. The primary source of information for this talk is The Dyslexia Handbook, updated in 2018, published by the Texas Education Agency.
