MHS students earn substitute certification at Region One ESC

Mission High School students received their substitute teaching certificate after their 2-day training at Region One on May 7th & 8th. Students start the program their freshman year and are also part of the Education & Training Endorsement.  They are required to take my Principles in Education & Training (9th), Child Development (10th), Instructional Practices (11th), and Practicum in Education and Training (12th). As they go through the program, they are actively involved in the Barbara Bush Teen Trendsetter one-on-one mentoring program at various elementary schools.

MHS students are partnered with several elementary schools where they can teach a few lessons and assist in the classroom.  They also participate in observations at the Jr. High campuses and help with special education students in the district as they prepare to participate in a variety of Special Olympics events throughout the year (bowling, boccee, Motor Skills Development Day, Spring Track Special Olympics).

MHS students must pass all 4 classes and go through the training then MCISD will waive the college hours needed to become a substitute but must be 18 years of age. They may only work for the elementary level until they get the required number of hours that other substitute teachers need.  In addition, they must go through the process of applying.

Some of these substitute certified students are also active members of my TAFE club (Texas Association of Future Educators). They are all looking to eventually become educators.
