Mission CISD has two high schools that offer AP Capstone Program

Mission High School and Veterans Memorial High School are part of an approved Advanced Placement (AP) program that also offers an additional two-year AP Capstone program. The AP Capstone is extremely rigorous and it is in addition to the already stringent schedule of their high school required coursework.

The program academically prepares students to pursue college-level studies while still in high school. The AP Capstone program consists of students taking AP Seminar their first year and AP Research their second. These courses are designed to complement other AP courses.

“This is an incredible program that not every district in Rio Grande Valley offers. Mission CISD is one of the select districts that does offer AP Capstone in order to provide our students with options that will significantly prepare them for their future endeavors,” said Dr. Carol G. Perez, Superintendent.

In participating in this program, students have the opportunity to use an interdisciplinary approach to develop their skills in critical thinking, research, collaboration, time management, and presentation that can be used later for their college coursework.

“AP Capstone students develop and strengthen the skills that they will utilize while at a higher academic institution. It exposes them to the research process and only allows them to get more comfortable with it before attending a college or university,” said Mr. John R. Hill, Director of Advanced Academic Services/UIL.

This program helps students stand out in the application process to colleges/universities, develop key academic skills they’ll use in college, become self-confident, independent thinkers and problem solvers. Students can also earn college credit if the college/university offers credit for qualifying scores.
