VMHS student plans mission to the moon for NASA’s summer program

Veterans Memorial High School senior, Andre Hodgson, completed the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Texas High School Aerospace Scholars (HAS) 2020-2021 virtual summer experience with NASA’S Johnson Space Center. Hodgson completed the HAS 16-week online interactive learning, culminating in a five-day virtual summer project-based learning for high- achieving students.

He was part of a team that utilized a system engineering model to plan a mission to the Moon and created a preliminary design review through the NASA Artemis themed course. Students are nominated to participate in HAS by their state legislators and complete the prerequisite online course. Once that is completed, they receive an invitation to participate in the team-based virtual summer experience. The online course consists of four distance-learning modules developed by certified teachers, aligned to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), and conducted between October 28, 2020 – March 8, 2021.

HAS is an authentic learning experience for Texas high school juniors to engage with NASA’s mission to become the next generation of Artemis explorers.  Students learn different STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) related fields of study they might want to pursue in college. Applications are available now through October 21, 2021. For more information on the program visit www.nasa.gov/has .
