MCISD provides migrant students innovative and interactive camps

Mission Consolidated Independent School District Migrant Department is in a constant search to find learning opportunities for students. This is how College First started providing original and creative camps that have been funded through federal programs for migrant students. They have included interesting topics that have captured the students’ interest such as Dinosaur World, Forensic Crime Scene (CSI) Investigation, Colonizing Mars, Global Pandemic and Earth Science.

“Our students have really enjoyed these interactive camps which not only provide them with information but also with hands-on activities,” states Dr. Carol G. Perez. “We strive to provide our students the most innovative programs that will help ensure their academic success.”

There are a variety of different topics such as Dinosaur World which has many interesting activities to offer students. They start off by learning how our world was born, the paleontological species that lived in different Earth eras, and they discover geological pattern formations with intact dinosaur fossils that are millions of years old.

In CSI Forensic Science, students get to explore law enforcement careers, military opportunities and take on the role of a CSI Investigator at a murder scene. The experience is an interactive forensic science lab where they examine blood splatter, fingerprinting, hair analysis, and footprint analysis to solve a murder mystery.

“We needed to get back to the root of it all,” states Nancy Villarreal, Migrant Coordinator. “We wanted to provide our students interesting topics that are part of what is currently happening in our world.”

These are only just a couple of the camps that are offered but all the camps are aligned with the state’s Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) requirements. There are over two hundred Migrant students that can take advantage of the camps throughout the year.
