Mission CISD transforms student

experiences with new elementary playgrounds

MISSION, TEXAS (Nov. 29, 2023) - In a significant development, Mission Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) has successfully completed the installation of new playground equipment at 11 elementary schools.

The initiative, announced in September of 2023, aims to enhance the student experience by providing updated and safe play spaces for Mission CISD students.

The District strategically utilized Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds to cover certain expenditures, freeing up local funds to pay for the playground transformations at multiple elementary campuses. The project brought playground transformations at several campuses, including:

  • Alton Elementary
  • Bryan Elementary
  • Cantu Elementary
  • Castro Elementary
  • Leal Elementary
  • Marcell Elementary
  • Mims Elementary
  • O’Grady Elementary
  • Pearson Elementary
  • Salinas Elementary
  • Waitz Elementary

Dr. Carol G. Perez, Superintendent of Schools at Mission CISD, highlighted the new playground equipment, stating, "This playground endeavor has been a goal of the district for some time. Now, children of all ages can play on it, and the excitement has been through the roof. Students are now enjoying the updated play spaces, marking an example of how we ensure the development of the whole child at Mission CISD," said Perez.

The new playground equipment is accessible to students of all abilities, ages two to 12, featuring 14 play activities and is ADA-compliant. Campuses were given the option to choose between two color schemes: sunglow yellow, pacific blue, and primary red, or primary green and tan.

The positive impact of the playground project was echoed by fifth-grader Andre Nolasco from Alton Elementary, who shared, "The first time we played on the new playground, it was full of fun and excitement. I want to thank our principal, Ms. Canales-Garcia, and everyone in the Mission CISD school board for making this happen."

With the project's completion, Mission CISD has successfully delivered its commitment to providing modern and safe recreational spaces for elementary students, contributing to the holistic development of the entire student body.
