Fit for the Future! Mission CISD teams up with Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation and Project Fit America to promote student fitness

MISSION, TEXAS (May 15, 2025) – Mission CISD’s Lucille Pearson Elementary Sports/Health Academy celebrated the launch of its new fitness program today, made possible by a $26,000 Project Fit America (PFA) grant funded by The Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation. The event featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony and live demonstrations by students showcasing the program’s innovative fitness equipment and dynamic physical education curriculum.

Pearson Elementary was awarded the grant following a competitive proposal process open to schools across Cameron, Starr, Hidalgo, and Willacy Counties. As part of the grant, the school received state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor fitness equipment, along with comprehensive curriculum resources to inspire students to lead active, healthy lifestyles.

During the event, Principal Melissa Davis expressed her excitement, stating, “Their generous grant has provided us with an innovative outdoor fitness area that encourages movement, connection, and well-being for people of all ages,” said Davis. “The support of the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation is not only helping us build stronger bodies but also a stronger sense of togetherness.”

The new program not only enhances physical education but also focuses on the development of social, character, and leadership skills. Physical education teachers will continue to receive on-site training and support from PFA over the next two years to ensure the program’s long-term success.

Pearson Elementary 5th grade student Alyna Logan shared her excitement about the new play area, noting how it gives her and her friends a fun place to stay active and play together.

"The Fit Pit is a wonderful place to exercise and have fun with all my friends!", said Logan.

The Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation, originally established as the Valley Baptist Medical Foundation in 1976, has been dedicated to improving the health and quality of life in the Rio Grande Valley.
