MISSION, TEXAS (JUNE 11, 2025) – Striking a high note at the state level, Mission Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) proudly announces that Mission High School student Eric Sylvia has been recognized as an “Outstanding Soloist.” The honor was awarded at the 2025 UIL State Solo & Ensemble Competition, held in Austin, Texas.
According to the University Interscholastic League, The Outstanding Soloist designation is awarded by UIL judges to recognize high levels of musicianship demonstrated during state-level performances. It is the highest recognition the UIL provides for high school music students.
To qualify, students must first earn a Division I rating at a regional UIL solo or small ensemble contest and then perform their solo from memory at the state competition. Out of more than 10,000 high school musicians who competed statewide this year, approximately 2% received this recognition.
Sylvia, a student of Mission High School guitar instructors Marcelino Farias and Jesus De Leon, prepared and performed a classical guitar solo for the competition. His instructors provided support and guidance throughout the process.
"Eric's passion for guitar is undeniable. His commitment, discipline, and love for music set him apart,” shared Marcelino Farias, Mission High School Guitar Instructor. “This recognition is well deserved."
Following the competition, Eric also performed his solo for a group of Mission CISD summer curriculum writers, who offered warm applause in response to his performance.
Through his journey learning guitar, he’s discovered a powerful way to express himself and connect with others, turning each performance into a reflection of his dedication and love for music.
"I love playing guitar and creating music, it’s my passion and the way I connect with the world," shared Sylvia.
Mission CISD recognizes Eric Sylvia for his achievement and representation of Mission High School at the UIL State Solo & Ensemble Competition.
