MISSION, TEXAS (OCT. 9, 2025) – At Mission CISD, learning goes beyond textbooks and into the world of imagination, innovation, and inspiration—thanks to teachers like Joanna Peralez at Midkiff Elementary.
Peralez, a kindergarten bilingual teacher with 16 years of teaching experience and 22 years in education, has transformed her classroom into a science lab where curiosity rules and creativity is the dress code...literally.
EINSTEIN-INSPIRED, STUDENT-DRIVEN
Inspired by her own childhood fascination with Albert Einstein and hands-on experiments, Peralez brings a “Wacky Scientist” character to life several times a year.
Wearing a lab coat, goggles, and often accompanied by costumed students, she leads exciting lessons where students learn scientific concepts by doing: Making snow, experimenting with textures, and exploring reactions.
“This age is like a sponge,” said Peralez. “They absorb everything, especially when it’s taught in a fun, meaningful way.”
A CULTURE OF ENGAGEMENT AND BELONGING
The Wacky Scientist isn't just about fun, it’s a powerful teaching tool. Perales uses it to build classroom culture, teach safety protocols, and inspire teamwork. Students eagerly await the characters’ visits, and their excitement for science spills into other parts of the day, from lunch line conversations to end-of-year reflections.
“Even when I’m not in costume, the moment I say ‘science,’ they light up,” she said. “That tells me it’s making a lasting impact.”
This innovative approach has received strong support from parents and school administrators. Peralez often shares photos of her classroom labs, receiving praise from families who say their children talk about the lessons long after the school day ends.
THE HEART OF MISSION CISD
For Peralez, this is more than a costume....it’s a calling.
“Science is what I have in my heart,” she said. “When you build a safe space and a sense of belonging, students believe they can be anything—a doctor, a scientist, even an astronaut.”
Her journey from paraprofessional to beloved classroom innovator reflects the district’s commitment to nurturing educators who bring passion and care to every lesson.
“Mrs. Peralez exemplifies the kind of teacher that makes Mission CISD special,” said Dr. Cris Valdez, Superintendent of Schools. “Her dedication shows the extraordinary impact a creative, caring educator can make.”
