Mission CISD launches winter break reading challenge to keep students engaged over the holidays

MISSION, Texas — As students head into winter break, Mission Consolidated Independent School District is encouraging families to keep learning a priority through a districtwide literacy initiative designed to make reading both fun and rewarding.

Districtwide literacy focus during winter break

The initiative, titled “Mission Possible: Hooray for Winter!”, challenges students to continue building their reading skills while school is not in session. The program encourages students to read daily, complete themed reading “missions,” and reflect on their favorite activities during the break

To support participation, every student will receive a Winter Break book pack, created in collaboration with Scholastic Books. The packs include age-appropriate books and materials outlining the reading missions, along with a QR code students can scan to share feedback on their experience

Incentives encourage continued reading

Students who complete the challenge will be entered into a drawing to win a Home Library, promoting continued reading beyond the winter break. In addition, the elementary campus with the highest participation rate will earn a special celebration when classes resume in January.

Superintendent encourages families to make reading a holiday tradition

District leaders say the initiative is designed not only to prevent learning loss during extended breaks, but also to encourage families to make reading part of their holiday traditions.

“This winter, we encourage families to take time to snuggle up and read together,” Superintendent Dr. Cris Valdez said in a message to families. “Thank you for supporting your child’s love of learning.”

The reading challenge reflects Mission CISD’s ongoing commitment to literacy and student success, reinforcing the importance of consistent learning habits both inside and outside the classroom.
