MISSION, TEXAS (February 23, 2026) - Mission Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) recently hosted its School Board Candidate Academy, an informational session designed to equip prospective trustees and community members with a deeper understanding of board governance, leadership responsibilities, and the vital role school boards play in shaping student success.
The academy emphasized that effective governance is foundational to thriving classrooms.
“We really are on a mission, and leadership matters,” said Dr. Cris King, Superintendent of Schools for Mission CISD. “This academy is about helping our community understand what board service truly requires, and why strong governance is essential to student success.”
The academy provided attendees with a comprehensive overview of the role of a school board under Texas law, governance versus management, legal and ethical obligations of trustees, required board training, time commitments, and election requirements.
“You have that courage to lead, whether in service or in public life,” Dr. King said. “And when you choose to serve students, you’re stepping into work that requires preparation, integrity, and a commitment to doing what’s right, especially when it’s not easy.”
A central theme of the academy was Mission CISD’s continued focus on House Bill 3 (HB3) goals, ensuring student outcomes remain measurable, intentional, and transparent.
“Our students must remain at the forefront of every decision,” Dr. King added. “That’s why our HB3 goals matter. They keep us grounded in outcomes, progress, and the responsibility we share to deliver results for kids.”
The academy also highlighted The Mission CISD Way and the importance of core values in guiding effective leadership.
“Great classrooms begin with great board rooms,” said Dr. King. “Core values matter because they shape how decisions are made, how trust is built, and how we stay united around what’s best for students.”
Dr. King noted that leadership expectations must be modeled from the top down.
“If we expect our leaders and our students to demonstrate integrity, accountability, and excellence, then we must lead and model those same characteristics,” Dr. King said.
By hosting the School Board Candidate Academy, Mission CISD continues its commitment to transparency, civic engagement, and preparing informed leaders who are ready to serve the community with purpose and student-centered focus.
