Mission CISD Student Earns Statewide Honor in 2026 Texas Youth Art Month Exhibition

MISSION, TEXAS (March 2, 2026Mission Consolidated Independent School District is proud to announce that a Veterans Memorial High School student has been selected to showcase his artwork in the 2025-2026 Texas Art Education Association Youth Art Month Spring Exhibition.

A Statewide Spotlight on Student Creativity

Samuel Garcia, a student at Veterans Memorial High School, earned statewide recognition for his artwork titled “Whispers of Dusk.” His piece will be displayed at the Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin throughout the month of March in celebration of National Youth Art Month.

The prestigious exhibition features Pre-K through 12th-grade student artwork from across Texas and highlights the creativity and talent of young artists statewide. The exhibit will be open to the public from March 1-29, 2026.

A Moment of Surprise, Confidence and Motivation

Samuel said receiving the news was both surprising and motivating.

“When Mrs. Rivera told me I was the only student in the district selected, I felt a warmth I’ve never experienced before,” Garcia said. “It was something I never thought would happen. After the shock, I just felt happy. It made me realize that if I can accomplish this, I can also aim for a Gold Seal at VASE.

“This recognition has really helped build my confidence, especially in my photography,” he continued. “It still feels like a huge accomplishment, but it motivates me to keep pushing myself. It shows that anything is possible when you put in effort and dedication.”

An Educator’s Pride and the Power of Passion

Rebecca Guerra-Rivera, Samuel’s art teacher at Veterans Memorial High School, said she recognized his passion for photography early on.

“When I met Samuel, I could tell by the way he spoke about cameras and photography that he had a strong passion for creating images,” Guerra-Rivera said. “Knowing that Sam’s image was chosen for Youth Art Month at the Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin was an awesome surprise.”

Celebrating the Importance of Arts Education

The Texas Art Education Association hosts the annual Youth Art Month Exhibition to promote the value of visual arts education across the state. Student and teacher achievements highlighted in the exhibit underscore the importance of district support for fine arts programs.

“As an art educator, moments like this are powerful reminders of why we do what we do,” Guerra-Rivera said. “When students are encouraged to follow their passion, amazing things happen. Success like this doesn’t happen by accidentit comes from commitment, heart and the courage to create.”

Mission CISD remains committed to fostering creativity, innovation and artistic expression as part of a well-rounded education for all students.
