MISSION, TEXAS (March 31, 2026) - At Mission CISD, caring for students begins with caring for the people who serve them every day. Through a growing focus on employee wellness, the district is investing in the health, support, and sustainability of its staff recognizing that their well-being directly impacts student success.
“I got into social work because when I was in high school, I was inspired to pursue something that would serve other people and help others,” said medical wellness social worker Brenda Zamora.
Supporting the People Behind the Mission
Zamora’s work centers on coordinating services, advocating for staff, and connecting employees with essential wellness resources. From organizing preventative care opportunities to partnering with community agencies, her role helps bring critical services directly into the district.
“As a medical wellness social worker, it entails a lot of coordination of services, advocacy and support services for school district staff,” Zamora said. “We do preventative services in collaboration with the community so that we can advocate better for the health and wellness for our staff members.”
These efforts include health fairs, screenings, and on-site services designed to remove barriers and make care more accessible for busy educators and staff.
Healthy Staff, Stronger Classrooms
At the heart of this work is a simple but powerful belief: when staff are supported, students benefit.
“When you have healthy schools, it's because you have healthy staff members,” Zamora said. “The data will show that that will trickle down into the classroom and to the performance even of students.”
By taking a proactive and holistic approach, Mission CISD continues to build a culture where staff wellness is not an afterthought, but a priority.
Breaking Barriers to Wellness
Despite growing awareness, one of the biggest challenges remains encouraging staff to prioritize their own health.
“Some of the challenges that I've seen and experienced is sometimes the buy in for wellness,” Zamora said. “It's also hard because we don't prioritize ourselves enough.”
She recalls how easily appointments can be pushed aside in the demands of the day.
“I have a parent meeting. I need to reschedule,” she said, describing a common reality for educators.
To address this, the district brings services directly to staff, making it easier to access care without disrupting their responsibilities.
“That’s why I love what I do, because we’re able to bring in doctors, bring in lab services, and bring these services to our staff,” Zamora said.
A Mission Rooted in Impact
For Zamora, the true impact of her work is reflected in the lives she has touched and moments that serve as a reminder of why the work matters.
“I just want to thank you for bringing light to me and giving me hope and believing in me,” a former student once told her.
“That really just reminded me on my mission and why I became a social worker,” Zamora said. “It just reminds me that you are making a difference.”
Mission CISD remains committed to supporting every member of its community ensuring that those who dedicate their lives to students are supported, valued, and empowered to succeed.
