MISSION, TEXAS (April 13, 2026) – Before learning how to swim, understanding water safety is an essential first step for anyone who spends time in or around water. Now in its fourth year, Mission Consolidated Independent School District’s (CISD) Water Safety Education Program continues to equip students with essential knowledge and skills that can help prevent accidents and save lives.
Through this initiative, second grade Mission CISD students build confidence in a fun, active environment while learning how to recognize potential dangers and respond safely in and around water.
“It is important that we provide this program so our students learn essential water safety skills and best practices,” said Martina Carrillo, Mission CISD Health and Physical Education Coordinator. “Whether they are at home, visiting a pool, or enjoying the beach, we want them to feel confident, prepared, and equipped to keep themselves and others safe in and around the water.”
Over the course of five weeks, the program serves second grade students from every elementary campus, providing each school with a scheduled day to participate in water safety instruction. Each structured, one-hour session introduces students to key safety skills, including:
- How to correctly use a life jacket
- Jumping into the water safely
- Safely exiting the water
- Floating on the front and back
- Basic breathing techniques
- Fundamental kicking and arm movements
- Introduction to treading water
This initiative also supports expanded use of the Mission CISD Aquatic Center, providing opportunities for additional student programs and specialized training in the summer. The program is delivered by certified instructors and lifeguards to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment.
“We are thankful for the support of our executive leadership team and the Curriculum and Instruction Department in helping make this program possible,” Carrillo added. “Especially since we have excellent facilities available for our students.”
Students are transported to the Mission CISD Aquatic Center at Mission High School using the district transportation system and always remain under the supervision of staff and chaperones. Parent permission slips are required for participation.
