MISSION, TEXAS (Oct. 9, 2026) – Mission Consolidated Independent School District held its first School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) meeting of the 2026–2027 school year on Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Mission CISD Annex.
More than 50 parents, district leaders and staff members participated in person and virtually, engaging in important conversations about student health, safety and wellness.
The meeting was opened by SHAC Chair and parent representative Enedina Salinas, who welcomed participants to the council's first gathering of the school year.
Strengthening Awareness and Prevention
Guest presenter Maria Montalvo led a discussion titled Supporting Texas Schools: Tucker's Law Compliance and Opioid Misuse Prevention. The presentation focused on Tucker's Law, which strengthens opioid misuse prevention education in Texas public schools. Participants learned about the importance of raising awareness of fentanyl and other opioids, recognizing potential risks and providing families with resources to help protect students.
Supporting Healthy Students, Families and Staff
The meeting also highlighted several district programs that contribute to the overall well-being of the Mission CISD community.
Nancy Villarreal, representing Mission CISD's Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Department, shared how the district connects families with valuable resources, services and opportunities to become more involved in their children's education.
District Nutritionist Edna Alvarez Prado provided insight into the Child Nutrition Program, including how meals are planned and prepared to support student nutrition, healthy eating habits and success in the classroom.
Mental health was another important focus of the meeting. Licensed Professional Counselor Marciela Ponce discussed 988 Day and the importance of Caring Out Loud, encouraging open conversations about emotional well-being, reducing stigma and reminding families that help is available when needed.
Recognizing that healthy schools also depend on healthy employees, Brenda Zamora from Mission CISD Employee Benefits highlighted the physical and mental health support services available to district staff.
Bringing Parents into the Conversation
The School Health Advisory Council provides an important opportunity for parents, educators and community members to collaborate on matters affecting student health and wellness.
By offering both in-person and virtual participation, Mission CISD is working to make these conversations more accessible to families and encourage greater involvement in district initiatives.
Through SHAC, Mission CISD remains committed to ensuring parents have a voice in the decisions and discussions that help create healthier, safer and more supportive schools for every student.
