MISSION, TEXAS (OCT. 26, 2026) - Two Mission High School juniors are proving that a little initiative can make a big difference.
Skyla Sanchez and Joshua Stewart, members of the Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE), organized a donation-based car wash on October 10, raising $700 to support their school’s special education program.
As part of their annual community service project, the students identified a need for additional hands-on learning materials and improvements to the program’s outdoor space.
With the funds raised, the students purchased educational activities designed to strengthen motor skills and support student development. The team also cleaned and improved the outdoor area, creating a more welcoming space for special education students to enjoy time outside.
“I am so proud because they made the initiative to get started on their own. They had a plan in motion and carried it through from start to finish,” said Mission High School TAFE sponsor, Deborah Colunga.
Mission CISD Superintendent Dr. Cris King praised the students for their compassion and leadership.
“Seeing the heart you put into this project reminds us that our future is in good hands,” said King. “This is the impact you can have on the world by showing kindness and leaving your footprint.”
The project reflects the power of student leadership, and the difference young people can make when they recognize a need and take action.
