MISSION, TEXAS (October 28, 2026) - At Mission Collegiate High School (MCHS), preparing students for college goes beyond academics. Through its student union, the campus is giving students a glimpse into college life by creating a space where they can study, socialize, collaborate, and build a sense of community outside the traditional classroom.
More than simply a place to spend time after school, the student union introduces students to the social and academic experiences that are an important part of college life.
Bringing College Culture to High School
College student unions serve as gathering places where students connect with classmates, study, participate in activities, and develop a sense of belonging within their campus communities. MCHS is bringing that concept to its high school students, providing opportunities to experience elements of college culture before graduation.
"As a collegiate high school, we do our best to emulate a real college experience," said MCHS senior Aeryn Bautista, who recently gave a video tour of the student union.
The space has become a popular gathering place on campus, averaging 20 or more students daily over the past several weeks.
A Place to Study, Socialize and Build Friendships
While academics remain a priority, the student union recognizes the importance of social interaction and recreation in the overall student experience.
Students can unwind after a school day by enjoying activities such as foosball, air hockey, puzzles and board games. The space also provides opportunities for students to strengthen friendships and connect with classmates outside the traditional classroom setting.
For Bautista, the student union offers a welcome opportunity to take a break from the academic demands of her senior year.
"It's my senior year and I really appreciate the opportunity to just relax after a long day of working on college applications or doing my dual enrollment classes," Bautista said.
These activities reflect the broader college experience, where students balance their academic responsibilities with social opportunities and campus involvement.
Students Supporting Students Through Academic Collaboration
One of the student union's key features is its Writing Center, which provides academic support through a peer-to-peer tutoring model.
MCHS students trained by South Texas College as Supplemental Instruction Leaders serve as peer tutors, helping fellow students strengthen their writing skills, develop essays and complete assignments, including coursework for college-level classes.
"On Tuesdays, we have Writing Center. Students that are part of the supplemental instructor program come in and help students work on their writing assignments, just like writing labs in college," Bautista explained during the tour.
Students can also use the student union to complete homework, form study groups, and develop positive study habits in an environment that encourages collaborative learning. For those seeking a quieter setting, study rooms are available for students to use.
This approach mirrors the academic support systems commonly available at colleges and universities, where writing centers, tutoring programs, and study groups play an important role in student success.
Preparing Students for More Than the Classroom
By offering a space that combines academic resources, recreation and student engagement, MCHS is helping students become familiar with the independence and community-centered environment they may encounter on a college campus.
The student union serves as an example of how Mission Collegiate High School is extending its college-focused mission beyond the classroom, giving students opportunities to experience college culture while building the skills, confidence and connections that will support their future success.
