Mission CISD rewarded for energy efficiency

Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) celebrated its seventh year of participation in the AEP Texas SCORE Program, which helps schools save energy and money, by accepting a check for $38,973. It is an incentive check earned through participation in the SCORE Program in 2013. Since joining the SCORE Program in 2007, Mission CISD has completed over 40 qualifying energy efficiency improvement projects in school buildings, which will save the district more than $256,241 annually. The incentives earned by the district through the SCORE Program, since 2007, total $164,004.

The SCORE Program provides no-cost facility improvement recommendations and financial incentives based on the total amount of energy the district will save. The improvements made by the district to date, will save over 2.5 million kilowatt-hours of energy annually, which is equal to the carbon dioxide emissions of more than 202,000 gallons of gasoline, according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) calculations.

“One of the nice things about the SCORE Program is we not only earn the incentives, but we also benefit greatly through the energy savings,” said Ricardo Rivera, executive director for facilities/maintenance/construction.  “The actual money saved on energy costs is money the district has to use for classroom instruction, and the incentives can be reinvested in other energy saving initiatives.”

Mission CISD’s 2013 improvements will save 609,214 kilowatt-hours of energy annually, equal to the carbon dioxide emissions from the electricity use of 21 homes for one year, according to EPA estimates. Projects completed in 2013 that resulted in this year’s incentive include: six lighting projects, five HVAC related projects, and two roofing projects.
