A total of 21 Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) students representing Mission High School and Veterans Memorial High School competed in the recent Area 1 Special Olympics Basketball Tournament. They returned with 19 medals and two ribbons. More than 1,000 athletes from across the Rio Grande Valley competed in individual basketball skills and team competitions. Athletes compete by age, gender and ability level.
Nine district athletes earned bronze medals in the three-on-three team competitions. Those athletes are: Arturo De la Rosa, Cain Acuna, Joel Barvo, Pedro Danny, Robert Wheat, Stephanie Trevino, Juan Adame, Frankie Villalobos, Jessie Sandoval.
Individual medal or ribbon winners for individual basketball skills are: Milton Cerda, second place, silver; Adrian Rodriguez, fourth place, ribbon; Vianney Campos, fourth place, ribbon; Hortencia De la Rosa, second place, silver; Ashley De la Rosa, first place, gold; Maria Rojas, second place, silver; Jorge Garza, third place, bronze; Carolina Gonzales, third place, bronze; Elidia Garcia, first place, gold; Yakelina Garza, third place, bronze; Omar Trevino, second place, silver; Moises Flores, first place, gold.
