Alton City Commission recognizes Alton Memorial Jr. High School Science Bowl team

                The Alton City Commission took time during their meeting of March 25 to honor a special team of students from Alton Memorial Jr. High School (AMJH). The commissioners formally congratulated and honored the school’s Science Bowl team that earned the title of Regional Champions, and qualified for national competitions.  They will be one of four middle school teams to represent Texas at the national event. The team members are: Nancy Olvera, Maximo Briones, Carlos Hernandez, Enrique Cantu, Alejandro Martinez.

                The Science Bowl is hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy. It is a nationwide academic competition that test students’ knowledge in all areas of Science and Mathematics. The teams from diverse backgrounds and demographics are comprised of four students, one alternate, and teachers who serve as coach. It is an intense, fast paced, head-to-head game-show style competition testing the knowledge of the students various Science disciplines including: Biology, Chemistry, Life Science, Earth Science, Physics, Energy, and Math.

                The National Science Bowl competition will be held in Washington, DC on April 24-28. Only 50 middle school teams from around the country advance to the national competition. This is the first known Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) team to compete in the National Science Bowl.
