Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) officials are making a big change to summer school programs for 2014 that families should be aware of as they make final plans for their summer vacations. Instead of holding all the summer school programs in June, the district has moved the bulk of the summer school programs to begin in late July and run into mid-August.
“We are moving most of our summer school programs closer to the beginning of the school year,” explained Ricardo López, superintendent of Mission CISD. “Plus we have changed some of their focus. It is not just about providing the additional help students may need, but we will also be giving them a jump start on the new school year. We hope this will really help students begin the year with more of their knowledge fresh in their minds.”
Mission CISD will still provide some summer school programs in June to help provide additional help for students who need to retake state tests in the summer. That will involve a fifth grade academy and some limited programs for junior high and high school students. Campuses will be contacting parents, as needed to address summer school needs as soon as the latest state testing results become available to the district.
The fifth grade academy will start June 3 and run through June 26. The elementary jump start summer programs will begin on July 22 and run through August 14.
The junior high Student Success Initiative (SSI) related programs start June 3 and run through June 25. The jump start programs will begin on August 4 and end on August 15.
For high school students, the TAKS and End-Of-Course related summer programs will begin on June 9 and run through July 11. The high school jump start programs will begin on August 4 and end on August 15.
District officials said, for the majority of students who will be involved in Mission CISD summer school programs, they will be in the jump start programs that run toward the end of the traditional summer vacation period, ending in mid-August. The first day of school for the 2014-2015 school year is Monday, August 25.
