KWJH teacher recognized as Commended Teacher of Humanities

                K. White Jr. High School Social Studies teacher, Matthew Adams has been honored by Humanities Texas. He was nominated for a 2014 Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities Award, which recognizes teaching excellence in humanities fields such as Social Studies. While Adams was not selected for the top honor, officials at Humanities Texas indicated that their board of directors was deeply impressed by his commitment to educational excellence and innovation. Based upon that, Adams was officially recognized as a 2014 Commended Teacher of the Humanities.

Walking into Mr. Adams classroom can, at times, be like walking into a time warp. He is known to dress as historical figures and give lessons, as those individuals. Adam’s cast of characters includes the periods of the conquistadors, the US Civil War, and the Texas Revolution.

Adams also makes use of artifacts, manuscripts, games, and music to help bring the stories and legends of history alive.

Outside of the classroom, Adams is also a historic re-enactor, and has participated in events at Goliad, Texas and as a member of the cannon crew at the Palo Alton Battlefield in Brownsville, Texas.

Pictured is Adams as he played a character from the Texas Revolution during a special visit to a Mission CISD elementary school.
