The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has released accountability ratings for schools and districts. Most schools and districts can earn ratings of Met Standard, Improvement Required, or Met Alternative Standard for alternative schools. For the second year in a row, Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) received a rating of Met Standard, as did all but one campus.
Not only did all of Mission CISD’s regular campuses earn ratings of Met Standard, many also earned several distinctions or additional honors from the TEA for outstanding performance in various areas.
School and district ratings are largely based on student performance on the annual STAAR test. The state also takes into consideration three other areas beyond the basic test scores: student progress, closing performance gaps, and postsecondary readiness. Falling short in any of these four areas can result in a campus or district getting a rating of Improvement Required.
The Mission Options Academy did not meet expectation in the areas of student achievement and postsecondary readiness and is the only Mission CISD campus to have earned a rating of Improvement Required.
In addition to the main accountability rating given to each school, they can also earn additional honors called distinctions. Elementary Schools can earn a total of six distinctions in: academic achievement in Reading/ELA, academic achievement in Math, academic achievement in Science, academic achievement in Social Studies, top 25% student progress, top 25% closing performance gaps, postsecondary readiness. Twelve Mission CISD elementary schools earned distinctions. They are: Cavazos Elementary School, all six distinctions possible; Bryan Elementary School, 5; Castro Elementary School, 1; Escobar/Rios Elementary School, 1; Midkiff Elementary School, 5; Leal Elementary School, 5; Marcell Elementary School, 3; O’Grady Elementary School, 1; Pearson Elementary School, 5; Salinas Elementary School, 4; Waitz Elementary School, 1; Mims Elementary School, 2.
Junior high schools can earn a total of 7 distinctions in: academic achievement in Reading/ELA, academic achievement in Math; academic achievement in Science, academic achievement in Social Studies, Top 25% student progress, top 25% closing performance gaps, postsecondary readiness. Two Mission CISD junior high schools earned distinctions, they are: Alton Memorial Jr. High School, 6; R. Cantu Jr. High School, 1.
Traditional high schools can earn up to six distinctions in: academic achievement Reading/ELA, academic achievement in Math; academic achievement in Science; academic achievement in Social Studies, top 25% closing performance gaps, postsecondary readiness. Mission High School earned one distinction. Veterans Memorial High School earned two distinctions.
Mission Collegiate High School earned one out of the five possible distinctions possible.
