More campus events inviting everyone to get physical

There is a growing trend within Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) schools. More schools are developing events and activities that are designed to reinforce the values of an active lifestyle and in some cases benefit the school itself through fundraising, and community involvement.

It began about three years ago when Veterans Memorial High School planned its first annual 5K event. This year, the number of events is growing. In the next two months, two Mission CISD schools are hosting Walk/Run events. The first event will be the R. Cantu Jr. High School First Annual Cavalier 5K/1 Mile Run-Walk. This will be held on October 18 at R. Cantu Jr. High School. Event day registration will begin at 6:45 a.m. The 5K will start at 8:00 a.m. The 1 mile fun walk will start soon after. Early registration is $10. Event morning/late registration will be $15.  Awards will be given for the top three males and females in nine different age categories. Registration forms can be found online, http://rcjhs.mcisd.net/apps/news/show_news.jsp?REC_ID=401815&id=0. Once filled out, the forms and payment can be taken to the school. For more information about the Cavalier 5K, call 323-7830.

On November 8, Alton Elementary School will host its First 5K Run/Walk/Get Colorful event. This will be a color run with the first wave starting at 8:00 a.m. The second wave starts at 8:30 a.m. Participants are asked to arrive an hour prior to the wave time. Registration can be done at Alton Elementary School, 205 N. Chicago, Alton. Early registration through October 24 is $10 for ages 15+, and $5 for 7-14 years old. After October 24, registration prices increase to $15 for ages 15+, and $10 for ages 7-14. T-shirts for the event will be $8.
