Mission CISD administrator selected for national superintendents leadership academy

Joe Lopez, executive director for state and federal programs at Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) has been selected by the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (ALAS) to participate in its prestigious Superintendents Leadership Academy (SLA). Only 15 assistant superintendents and administrators from across the nation were selected to participate in the year-long program.

“This opportunity to collaborate and dialogue with my cohort members who are also aspiring to become superintendents one day, has been an amazing experience thus far,” said Lopez. “The information and experiences being shared will assist me as I continue to develop and grow as an instructional leader for Mission CISD and my community.”

The ALAS says this leadership program is the first of its kind in the United States to focus on preparing the next generation of school system leaders with the skills necessary to close achievement gaps and specifically address the needs of English Language Learners, and other disenfranchised groups.

Participants are selected for the program based on their proven record of leadership and commitment on raising the level of student achievement for students of color and for English Language Learners for the school districts they serve.

The year-long program covers Curriculum and Instruction/Assessment; Equity Leadership and Community Engagement; Governance and Strategic Planning; Leadership and Preparing to Become a Superintendent Preparation; Management Systems and Structures; and Government Relations. Experienced superintendents and other educational professionals share their expertise as a part of the sessions held during the year.
