Both Mission CISD high school bands earn superior ratings at UIL marching contest

After months of rehearsals, perfecting their steps, and musical performances, the Mission High School Eagle Band and Veterans Memorial High School Patriot Band each had their moment on the field during the recent UIL Region 15 Pigskin Jubilee Marching Band Competition held in McAllen.  All the time and sweat paid off with the best possible ratings for both bands; Division One, Superior.

The MHS band is now preparing for the next round of marching competition to be held this Saturday in San Antonio, TX. As a 6A band with a Division One rating, the Eagle Band will be a part of the Area Round of competitions.  5A bands, which include the Patriot Band, are not eligible to advance in competitions this year, based upon the UIL rotation used for marching competition advancement. The Eagle Band is scheduled to perform at 2:15 p.m. at Farris Stadium located at 8400 N. Loop 1604 West in San Antonio. It is a part of the Northside ISD Dub Farris Athletic Complex. Ticket wristbands will cost $5.

Marching bands are judged on their tone, musicianship, and marching. Marching scores include overall execution and the integration of drill teams.

This is the second year in a row the Patriot Band has earned a Division One rating at Pigskin. Last year, they also advanced to Area competitions. The Patriot Band’s show was titled “Any Way the Wind Blows.” The music was based on Bohemian Rhapsody by the rock group Queen. They used visual elements depicting the flow of air with the color guard.

The Eagle Band show is titled, Statue-esque. The music is by Don Barrett. This composition tells a story of statues coming to life and then returning to a statue-like state.
