Elementary schools partner with Speer Memorial Library for a reading spooktacular

Growing partnerships between the Speer Memorial Library in Mission and Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) elementary schools is resulting in some fun literacy events. The most recent event included students and parents from Midkiff Elementary School and O’Grady Elementary School. The Reading Spooktacular at the Library, combined some Halloween fun with Social Studies.
Students came dressed in their costumes and attended several sessions related to reading. They also were treated with free books, bookmarks, pencils, reading wristlets, and coupons. The evening included the reading of children’s books.
Presentations supported by the library included one on The Ghost Adventures, by the Hotcaveg family of Brownsville. The family presented a paranormal storytelling activity about historical buildings in the Rio Grande Valley. Their stories included information on the historic importance of the buildings and locations.
Parents and students also received information on the use of e-books and how they can be used as a resource.
Pictured are some of the students who attended the ready spooktacular as they enjoyed one of the book readings.
