Mission CISD students attend Texas Boys State

Two students from Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) participated in Texas Boys State this year. The Texas Boys State is sponsored by the American Legion and is a type of citizenship training for boys who have completed their junior year of high school.

Xavier Alonzo from Mission High School (MHS) and Alex Hinojosa from Veterans Memorial High School (VMHS), spent part of their summer attending Texas Boys State. During the event, they reviewed knowledge about the political machinery of a state, and then ran for offices as real candidates. At Texas Boys State, citizens organize their own city, county, and state governments, and they choose their own officials in accordance with regular election procedures. They also learn the duties of the various city, county, and state officers, as well as introduce and argue their own bills in a Legislature.

Texas Boys State indicates individuals nominated to participate should demonstrate: strong academic performance, excellent interpersonal skills, exhibited leadership, solid oratorical skills, have successfully completed his junior year, and be recommended by school officials.

Alonzo and Hinojosa were sponsored by American Legion Post 93 in Mission, Texas. They recently received their certificates recognizing their participation in Texas Boys State.
