All Mission CISD schools earn national Let’s Move! Active Schools recognition

Mission, Texas- Two years ago, Mission Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) began a move toward creating healthier schools through a partnership with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. The results are not only transforming the district’s schools and school community, but it is also starting to earn national recognitions.

Each Mission CISD school has just earned a Let’s Move! Active School National Award. This is a part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Initiative. Only 544 schools in the nation earned this recognition in 2016 that honors outstanding efforts in creating an active school environment. It is considered the nation’s top physical education and physical activity distinction for K-12 schools. The award celebrates a school’s commitment to providing students with at least 60 minutes of physical activity before, during, and after school each day.

“I applaud these schools for creating Active School environments that are inspiring students to be more engaged learners and ensuring that physical education and physical activity continue to be an important part of every child’s educational experience,” said First Lady Michelle Obama in the Let’s Move! Active Schools announcement.

To earn a Let’s Move! Active Schools National Award, a school must have met significant benchmarks in five areas: physical education; physical activity before and after school; physical activity during school; staff involvement; and family and community engagement.

Let’s Move! Active Schools said studies show that active kids do better. They also indicate physical activity helps kids stay healthy and strong, but also contributes to higher test scores, improved attendance, better behavior in class, and enhances leadership skills, along with a lifetime of healthier habits.

Entering its third year of improvements through the partnership with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, Mission CISD is continuing to improve upon physical activity resources, programs, and professional development designed to be just one part of creating healthier students, staff, and school communities.
