MCISD Girl Power Rally Pushes Girls to Challenge Themselves

December 20, 2016– Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) held its second annual Girl Power Rally today, Dec. 20, at Veterans Memorial High School. High school and junior high school girls gathered to cheer each other on and have the senior girls share their advice for excelling in high school and beyond.

“Our objective today is to make them believe,” said Alexandra Salinas of Veterans Memorial High School. “They have more power than they will ever understand.”

The list of speakers included high school girls who are at the top of their class and excelling in sports, clubs or outside activities. The message to junior high girls was to explore clubs, classes, or activities that will help them discover their interests and to overcome the limits others may set for them, whether it be traditionally male clubs or career paths. More importantly, girls were encouraged to support each other and to be their own cheerleader believing they can do the impossible.

Last year, science teacher Ronnie Mehis, of R. Cantu Jr. High School, invited a former student to speak to his current students, but that idea grew to become a district-wide event for sixth, seventh and eighth grade girls from R. Cantu Jr. High School (RCJH), Alton Memorial Jr. High School (AMJH), K. White Jr. High School (KWJH), and Mission Jr. High School (MJH). The event is designed to be a fun, uplifting experience inspiring the younger girls to dream big and find the right people in their family, peers and school staff to help them take the actions necessary to make their dream a reality.
